OPINION: CLIMATE CHANGE

Nowadays we enjoy many advances which have been created by different industrial revolutions and new technologies. However, the environment is being affected by the lifestyle of humans. I believe that environmental problems are caused by pollution. The levels of carbon dioxide have been risen and in many parts of the world, the quality of the water is not good because the rivers have been polluted by industrial waste. All this causes problems like the greenhouse effect, the destruction of the ozone layer and global warming. In conclusion, we are talking about climate change.

Scientists say climate change is getting worse and is causing terrible effects on the environment. For example, many countries like Spain are suffering heat waves and severe drought. In addition, many plant and animal species are on the verge of extinction, like the Iberian lynx. If we close our eyes and do nothing, some disasters will take place. For instance, the ice in the Arctic Sea will melt and sea levels will rise. This means that in most cases islands and coastal cities, such as New York, will no longer be inhabitable because they will be flooded.

In my opinion, there are many things as individuals we can do to prevent climate change. Firstly, we need to recycle our waste, like bottles and newspapers. Secondly, we should use renewable energies, like solar energy. In addition, if we conserve energy like gas, we will create less pollution. Finally, I think we should not use aerosols because they destroy the ozone layer.

I believe that in most cases, the conservation of the environment is responsibility of the governments because they can support programmes of protection and conservation. But individuals and the communities can do many things, too in order to prevent climate change and environmental problems.
