Charles Dickens

MY ANSWERS

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth on 7 February 1812. In that city of the south of England you can visit "The Victory", the ship that fought in the Battle of Trafalgar  in which Vice-Admiral Nelson was shot in battle, the killing taking place on Victory's quarter deck (1805). The British beat the Franco-Spanish fleet.
Dickens moved to London in 1823  with his family starting to work at a blacking warehouse at the age of twelve. He taught himself shorthand and began to work as a freelance reporter in the court of Doctor's Commons. After separating from his wife he moved to Kent. He died in 1870 and was buried in the Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey.
Dickens times were Victorian times. Queen Victoria ruled the country between 1837-1901. Her son and heir was Edward VII. After Edward VII, his heir Edward VIII became king. As he got divorced and wanted to re-married, he abdicated on his brother Prince Albert, who became king under the name of George VI. Her daughter Elizabeth II , the present Queen, was the heiress to the throne on her father's death.

I like The Victory. If you ever go to Portsmouth, it's worth a visit.
